THREADS & TERRITORIES 2023

SUDESTADA in Brooklyn presented Threads and Territories, an exhibition curated by Ragna Froda and Elisa Lutteral, which ran from September 16th to 23rd 2023. The show featured works by Pati Lutteral, Kiva Motnyk, Elodie Blanchard, Helen Oji, Nanette Dekool, Fanny Allié, and Janis Stemmermann, and brought together a collective of artists who possessed the remarkable ability to infuse the familiar with a new perspective. Each artist, in their own distinct manner, embarked on a journey to unearth the profound potential concealed within everyday material, offering fresh insights into the ordinary. In a world often fixated on grandiosity, these artists extended an invitation to explore their unique universes, visions, and the meanings hidden within the everyday.

In each piece, a meticulous curation of textiles and narratives converged, woven and fused to create a tapestry of significance. The materials were carefully gathered to mirror the changing seasons, personal and collective stories, and the diverse landscapes traversed by this eclectic group of artists. Through these choices, each artist’s essence became vividly apparent, often incorporating repurposed fabrics with origins rooted in their own wardrobes, those of loved ones, or discarded fragments reminiscent of archaeological remnants of contemporary society. By acknowledging the powerful symbolism textiles held in shaping daily existence, these artworks offered glimpses into captivating narratives.
